Southwest Regional Medical Center Hematology and Oncology Center Closing
Statement by Cindy Cowie, CEO, Southwest Regional Medical Center
By now you may have heard that effective January 31, 2013, the Southwest Regional Medical Center Hematology and Oncology Center will close. Offering this service for our community has been such an honor; however, the tremendous uncertainty in the world of healthcare reform has required us to make changes like this to help provide for the best future for Southwest Regional Medical Center and the delivery of care in Greene County.
Healthcare today is challenging. We are at a pivotal crossroads with even more changes coming our way. These changes include cuts in Medicare, a struggling economy, changes in some insurance classifications (which reduce payment to just 1/3 of what we previously received for the same level of care) and changes in how, we as a nation, will administer healthcare. As always, we will continue to do what we must to ensure the future of our community hospital. This sometimes means making difficult decisions like closing the Center.
Please know, we have done everything possible to ensure the smoothest transition for the patients of the Southwest Regional Medical Center Hematology and Oncology Center as they move to another facility. There are many wonderful treatment centers in the region and we have faith that those impacted will continue to receive outstanding care. Anyone in need of medical records can get a copy by calling 724- 627-1953.
Lastly, I believe the center’s closing may have caused some speculation and undue concern about the overall future of the hospital. Please do not be concerned. We are committed to moving our hospital forward and believe the changes we have made will allow us to be successful for many years to come.
In the meantime, what can you do to help us through these challenging times? We humbly ask you to support your hospital, whenever possible. You have a choice in where you go for lab tests, diagnostic imaging studies and even many surgeries. Request us by name and make a choice to use our services whenever possible. It is your support that will enable us to continue on our path of providing care for many years to come.
Thank you for all you do. We appreciate your understanding and continued support and pledge to work hard to continue providing care for you and your family.
